#2 – Key defensive stand helps New Fairfield capture girls lacrosse title.

At this point, it’s cliché to suggest that defense wins championships. Really, it’s more accurate to say that teams putting together strong all-around performances win championships. Yet it is still usually offensive plays or moments that gather the most attention. But when New Fairfield needed a critical defensive stand to regain its footing in the Class S girls lacrosse final, the defense stood tall. After building a seemingly-comfortable 8-2 lead, the Rebels saw East Catholic storm back, eventually cutting the deficit to just a pair of goals and then earning possession on the next draw. With the chance to continue its comeback within East Catholic’s reach, New Fairfield’s defense made the play it needed, forcing a turnover with 3:30 remaining. The Rebels quickly took advantage to add an insurance goal to secure the state title. Cliché or not, sometimes it is the defense that makes the most important plays.
